The transformation of the technology of the textile industry in the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries did what countless later technological innovations have done: it both created large numbers of jobs and new opportunities and it threw people out of work.

Jobs were created in one place and lost elsewhere. There were shifts in the location and concentration of industry. This learning module provides case studies of the impact of technological innovation on people and places, on those who benefited and those who lost.
